Potency vs Skill
This article discusses an unfair topic.
I believe that this issue can become accepted over time, just as some other unfair conditions are the normal and accepted by humanity.
It is not fair, for instance, that certain species of animals have wings while humans do not. Nor is it ‘fair’ that certain human races have more endurance than others. (etc)
Please keep these things in mind as we continue...
On the topic of Energy-Working and Powers, the vast majority of people feel that all things are Skill. And like any skill, such as Math, anyone can learn it.
This is only true up to a point.
There is a certain innate ability that allows some people to handle energy far more effectively than others. This innate ability I call “Potency”. And Potency coupled with Skill, allows those individuals to far exceed those that only have Skill.
A loose example of Potency:
Take the world’s most skilled computer programmer, and have them craft a program that is designed to compute extremely difficult numbers.
Put this program on a 286 computer. It will wow anyone that watches it.
Put a copy of this program on another computer next to it, but use a 386 Processor in the new computer. Now have the 2 computers run the program against each other.
The program on the 386 computer will beat the same program on the 286 computer, every time.
Now what has happened? The program is the same. The skill is exactly the same for both programs. Yet the higher powered processor's raw power can overwhelm the speeds of the lower. Thus the Processor needs to be taken into account.
In simple terms, those with greater energy Potency can pump up the raw power of their energy abilities, beyond those that don’t have that natural edge.
Now it’s been my experience that those of Potency tend to stagnate in skill because they have an edge, whereas some without the edge push harder to learn skills.
Further, there are those that seek out beings of power, such as gods and demons, to get a measure of that being’s Potency to compensate for their own lack in that area.
Thus, there are means of leveling the playing field.
This is true until you find those with the Potency and the drive to learn every Skill to fullest capability. Then you have people that can do things this world has never seen.
