What is a Shield?
A shield is basically an interference pattern within an energy field surrounding a person, place, or thing. Shields are meant to block energy from passing through them.
Why Should I Create A Shield?
There is no need to be paranoid all the time, but there are those out there who will use their abilities to attempt to dominate, control, or harm others. If you are not sensitive to psi, you are much more difficult to affect, so such people usually concentrate their efforts on other psis--particularly those who are untrained or who have little training. Additionally, some spirit entities and rogue constructs (artificially created spirit entities) may also be hostile. A shield can help you regulate the input you receive on a psychic level, reducing the chance of being overwhelmed or overloaded by it. A shield is like a seat belt. Usually you won't need it, but if you do, it can save you a lot of pain if make a habit of wearing it every time you drive. And a psi is always "driving". A good shield sends the message that you do have training, and may be able to defend yourself from an attacker. This causes many predators to avoid the attempt in the first place, and look elsewhere.
How Do I Create A Shield?
Basic Resistance Shield:
Charge your skin, then concentrate on the energy in and above your skin becoming thick, hard, and impenetrable. Reinforce this at least 4 or 5 times per day. Eventually, this will become the "default" for your field (aura).
Basic Construct Shield:
Charge your skin. Visualize a beam of light coming from your head, and contacting your entire body--where it touches, the energy on your skin solidifies into an impenetrable barrier. (If you know how, do this by projecting the energy from your head). Be sure to concentrate on the barrier becoming impenetrable.
Variations on this can include visualizing yourself in a suit of armor, a barrier of flames, or ice, or any combination of other things. You can layer your shields, creating multiple shields with different consistencies and "appearances". Selective shields can be created, to filter out some frequencies and patterns, and not others--this is of limited use, however, as a good attacker can shift to slip through this deliberate hole, by mimicking whatever it is programmed to allow through.
You should work on keeping your shield up at all times--24 hours a day, seven days a week. At first, many people feel "stifled". This is because they haven't yet learned to work through their own shield, so the shield is blocking their abilities. Consistent use of a shield will have the majority of people fully adapted, and working unhindered again, within a week or so. Since the shield is yours, you know every inch of it--every pattern and frequency. Learning to compensate for your shield will be something you will do automatically, simply by continuing to practice sensing and using your abilities with the shield in place.
Once you compensate for your shield this way, it's like one-way glass. You can see out, but others cannot see in.
It may take several weeks to achieve a 24/7 shield. When you're done, your shields will remain in place without your having to think about them, and you need only reinforce them if they are challenged by something trying to invade or attack.

Psionic energy passes through almost all substances. Even psycho-kinetic effects must be “tuned” to the right target to create an effect.
The one thing the psionic energy will react with easily is itself, thus the best method of stopping psychic effects is to place a barrier of psionic energy around that which is to be protected. This barrier is usually called a shield. Shields are a field of energy that comes in different formats: dynamic and static.
Static fields are energy layers that stop dynamic effects, by having too much dense energy in the way for them to penetrate to the target.
Dynamic fields are energy layers that stop static effects, by having too much moving energy in the way for them to penetrate to the target.
Basic Shield
This is the simplest of energy barriers. It is halfway between being completely dynamic or completely static.
Dense Shield
This is a more dense energy format. Like a brick or metal wall, it stops incoming energy by use of a more sturdy barrier. While allowing for the ability to stop more damage, these shields tend to “shatter” when they are breached.
Absorbing Shield This is a less dense energy format, which absorbs the “impact” of the incoming energy. It is like having a large mass of jello or padding around the psychic. Things can penetrate the shielding, but their velocity is slowly absorbed by the energy, at which point they will eventually stop. This tends to leave unwanted patterns and energy in the shielding, but the psion can either depatternize then absorb the energy, or remove it from the field.
Reflective Shield
This uses a dense shielding with some give, that “bounces” the attack back in the direction it came from.
Filter Shield
This allows the psion to selectively filter out a specified psionic effect. To filter an effect the psion must also have the psionic ability associated with the thing being filtered. As an example, to filter emotions the psychic must have empathy. Empaths are particularly found of using this shield to filter out emotional psionic projections.
High-energy State Shield
This is an extremely dynamic energy field. The psionic energy is in a constant state of movement, much like a very hot boiling pan of water. This high-energy state knocks incoming energy around and degrades the pattern of the incoming energy, making it harder for the energy or pattern to hit the target.
De-patterning Shield
This is like a High-energy State Shield, but even more degrading to energy patterns that are exposed to it. Any energy that does not penetrate this field is absorbed and integrated as part of the shield.
Converter Shield
This is like a De-patterning Shield, but it takes the energy and converts it into some other psionic effect. Usually this effect is used to create constructs. The psion must also have the required ability for what the energy is being converted into.
Redirect Shield
This allows the attack to redirected in a random direction.
Grounding Shield
This takes any attack directed at the target and redirects it into the floor, dissipating the energy into the ground.
Cloaking Shield
This uses a different approach then most others, it simple shifts the psionic energy field so that it resembles something else, such as a house cat, hedge, or some other non-hostile uninteresting object. The psion must have the psychic pattern of the thing they desire to appear as.
Layered Shield
This layers more then one shield type, one on top the other, to create a shield that is better at defending against more then one attack type.
Simple Chaotic Shield
This is similar to a Layered Shield, but instead of layering the shield types, it rotates through them, in rapid random succession.
Advanced Chaotic Shield
This is ultimate shield for psionic energy effects. Like the Simple Chaotic Shield, this effect rotates through different shield types, in rapid random succession. Unlike the Simple Chaotic Shield, it does not use one shield type at once, but all of them at once. Each fist-sized area of the shield is a different shield type that moves around the shielding at random speeds. This means that the shield is constantly shifting, so no particular type of attack will be best against the shield.
